Ramsgate 2 Belgium History is made

  1. I heard about Marcy Macdonald over the years - my good friend Peter Jurzynski often spoke of her adventures & I have some appreciation of her talents having done some open water swimming myself. Being part of the boat crew for her adventure was something special. It is hard to describe the enormity of the challenge. Perhaps the best way to appreciate Marcy's tenacity was when we got to Dungeness East which is a commercial port with the oil refinery late at night. She'd already swam for the best par of a day or more - maybe 25 hours if I recall. The tide was flowing hard in the wrong direction & Marcy was given a stark choice - swim 400 yards to shore to claim the swim which would still be the furthest solo crossing route - or hold position against the tide until it changed & then finish 12 more miles to the Belgian border. Marcy chose to continue & the rest as they say is history. It was something special to witness first hand. Well done Marcy.
